INTRODUCTION OF SOLAR ENERGY

The sun generates an enormous amount of energy, about 1500 quadrillion kilowatt-hours per year. Because of reflection, scattering, and absorption by gases in the atmosphere, however, only 47% of this, or approximately 700 quadrillion kilowatt-hours, reaches the surface of the earth.
Solar radiation is electromagnetic radiation in the 0.28...3.0 µm wavelength range.
       The Solar Spectrum include

  • Ultraviolet radiation which is visible to eye
  • Infrared radiation with long wavelength (0.78...3.0 µm), which makes up most of the remaining 49% of the solar spectrum.
  • Direct radiations: Solar radiation  received directly
  • Diffuse radiations:Solar radiation  received indirectly(diffusion in air, dust, water)
  • Global radiation. Sum of direct and diffuse radiations

The amounts of solar energy arriving at the earth’s surface (also called SOLAR INSOLATION) vary over the year, from an average of less than 0,8 kWh/m2 per day during winter more than 4 kWh/m2 per day during summer in Europe.Solar Insolation for Pakistan is 6 KWH/m2/day.Thus the average annual Global radiation on a horizontal surface amounts to approx. 1000 kWh/m2 in Central Europe, Central Asia,

SOLAR ENERGY AS FUTURE NEED OF WORLD

World is facing number of severe environmental problems such as insufficient management of natural resources and over population.Area of another concern is Industrial and road pollution, effecting public health. Nevertheless, we have little choice but to focus on alternative source of energy.Mobilization of this movement for Solar Energy awareness does not lack ideas or competency, but it lacks power,we have not yet aligned ourselves.Effective campaign is to bring as many people on table as possible and create an institutional muscle that will ensure our success.Achieving this goal promises an accelerated transition to cleaner more secure energy future.

Studies and Statistics are indicating that world economy, consumers and public is suffering increasingly from rising energy prices because energy reserves are becoming scarce.Known Oil reserves will last only 46 years, and Gas reserves only 66 years. On the other hand consumption levels are increasing day by day.Energy’s annual demand is expected to rise by 59% by year 2030.This will result in the time span of available supplies decreasing even further. The problem is exacerbated by the growing hunger for energy in  Asia and increasing dependence on the crisis ridden region of East where largest deposits of Oil and Gas exist.Long before the ultimate demise of Oil & Gas,valuable fuel will become scarce, extraction rate will drop unavoidably.Despite state of the art extraction technology, quantity of gas and oil  extracted will decrease year by year. Rising demand with diminishing supply is forcing prices skywards.Even the oil companies are aware of critical trend and CHEVRON writes in advertisement “ World consumes two barrel of oil for every new barrel discovered”

Due to above reasons Solar Energy is becoming major area of interest for future energy strategy.
